HARMONIC MAPS , MINIMAL SURFACES AND GEOMETRIC FLOWS

BREST , FRANCE
8-12 july 2002

Second annoucement

An international congress devoted to Harmonic Maps, Minimal Surfaces and Geometric Flows will be held at the Department of Mathematics of the University of Brest under the support of the CNRS through the GDR 0677.

The themes of the conferences hold a central position in Riemannian geometry. The theory of minimal surfaces goes back to the construction of the catenoid by the French geometer and engineer J.B. Meusnier (1754-1793). The first major study of harmonic mappings between Riemannian manifolds was made by Eells and Sampson (1964).
The subjects are vast and over the years different branches have developped, certainly too many to cover in a single conference. In this meeting we propose to concentrate primarily on the analytic aspects of the theory. Some fundamental areas of study are :

- The nature of the singular set and regularity properties of harmonic mappings ;
- The use of minimal surfaces in the study of 3-manifolds ;
- Uniformisation of geometric structures by heat flow type equations.

We welcome specialists in other related subjects who may gain or contribute ideas as well as young researchers.

LOCATION

Brest in July is a pleasant and stimulating environment, set on the far west corner of France. There are beautiful beaches, many local historic sites, a rich cultural life which centres around the port in the evenings and Europe's premier ocean dicovery park Oceanopolis.
The week after the conference, the town of Brest is hosting the departure of the Tall Ship's Race. Between 60 and 80 Tall Ships will be setting off on the first leg of the race towards Corogne in Spain, including the Cutty Sark. Many of these sailing boats will arrive during the week of the conference and will provide a great spectacle down at the port. There will be a number of opportunities for participants to go and have a look. For more details, see the web site Cutty Sark. An additional attraction will be a concert given by the world famous singer Cesaria Evora on the evening of Saturday 13 July.
